Large numbers of sewers in Melbourne are
in need of repairs. One way of doing repairs is to line them with resin
impregnated felt liners. The liner is inverted into the pipe and then
set with hot water sent through the pipe. In order to do this the pipe
must be clear of sewerage. Our job is to keep the pipe clear for as long
as it takes to repair the pipe, without spilling one drop of the magic
fluid in the process. Quite easy really.

Our most recent bypass was in Ormond in
Victoria. We had to be able to handle normal flows up to 60 litres per
second under normal conditions but we needed to be able to pump up to
200 litres per second under rainy conditions. On top of this we had top
provide 100% backup in case of pump failure. The whole system was
electric with power coming from silenced generators. |

Traffic management is very important in
these projects. We had to lay polypipe in the street and over twenty
driveway crossings were required to allow residents normal access to
their properties. The amount of polypipe used was 500 metres. Adequate
signage and barriers are required to assure safety to residents and
pedestrians.

We operated in two locations. The lining work took 4
and 6 days. The operation was manned 24 hour a day and both sewer
lines were succesfully relined without spilling a drop. |
