AIR OPERATED PUMPS
Air Operated Pumps
What is an Air Operated Double Diaphragm Pump?
An air operated double diaphragm pump (AODD) is a type of reciprocating positive displacement pump that is powered by compressed air. Like any diaphragm pump, they are designed to move liquid by using reciprocating diaphragms to expand and contract a pumping chamber. They’re safe, easy to use, and can be used where electrical power is not available.
Where are they used?
Air operated double diaphragm pumps handle thick fluids, corrosive fluids and abrasive fluids. They are self priming, can be submersed, and they are not fussed about being left on when the discharge valve is closed. Add to those features the fact that they are normally acceptable for hazardous atmospheres, and are light enough to be carried, and it is clear that the air operated double diaphragm pump is a versatile and useful tool. Obviously an air compressor and air lines are needed as with any other air operated equipment.
Air operated double diaphragm pumps are positive displacement pumps, which utilize compressed air on one side of each diaphragm and the pumped fluid on the other. Discharge pressures can be almost as high as that of the compressed air. Flow rates can be adjusted by throttling the compressed air supply. For sludges which can only just flow, we suggest the “Mud Pig” which uses compressed air, and alternatively fills and discharges a pressure cylinder. Another option is the “Sludgemaster” air driven centrifugal pump, capable of handling some solids or sludge. It is useful for hazardous atmospheres, or for some of the jobs normally handled by electrosubmersibles, such as desludging inside pilings. Compressed air drives may offer quicker mobilization than electrical drive.
